How do I crop an image to a specific aspect ratio?
Drop your image into the cropper and pick a preset such as 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 or enter a custom ratio. The crop box snaps to that ratio and you can drag its edges to choose how much of the picture is included. Move the box around the image to reframe the subject, then click crop to download the result. This is handy for preparing thumbnails, profile pictures and social media posts where the platform expects a fixed shape.
Can I crop free hand without an aspect ratio?
Yes. Switch the ratio mode to free, and the crop box can be resized to any width and height independently. This is the right choice when you only want to remove a margin or focus on an irregular detail. If you accidentally drag too far, you can reset the box to the full image and start again. The export uses the exact pixel dimensions of the box, so you know precisely what size your cropped image will be.
Does the cropper work with very large images?
It can handle photos up to about 50 megapixels in modern browsers without issue. The image is loaded into a canvas element, so the limit depends on your device memory. If a huge picture is sluggish, resize it to a reasonable size first and then crop. The output preserves the original resolution within the cropped area, which means you do not lose pixel sharpness compared with the source file.
Are my photos uploaded to your server when I crop them?
No. Cropping happens entirely in your browser. The original file stays on your computer and only the cropped result is offered for download. This makes the tool safe to use on private photos, identity documents or anything else you would rather not send across the internet. There is no account to create and no record of your activity is stored, so you can crop as many images as you like with full privacy.
Can I crop a circle or rounded shape from an image?
Yes. Switch the shape option to circle and the crop area becomes circular instead of rectangular. The exported PNG file has a transparent background outside the circle, which is perfect for avatars and profile pictures. If you need a softer edge, increase the corner radius option, which produces a rounded rectangle. JPG output cannot store transparency, so always pick PNG when exporting non rectangular crops.
In what format is the cropped image saved?
You can pick PNG, JPG or WebP as the output format. PNG is the safest default because it is lossless and supports transparency, which matters for circular or rounded crops. JPG produces smaller files for photographs without transparency. WebP is the smallest of the three and is supported by all modern browsers. The file name uses the original name with a cropped suffix, so it never overwrites your source file.
