What is Article schema and why should I use it?
Article schema is a JSON-LD structured data block defined by schema.org that describes news, blog or editorial content to search engines. Adding it lets Google identify the headline, author, publish date, publisher logo and main image, which makes your post eligible for the Top Stories carousel, rich result cards and Google Discover. Without it, Google has to guess these details from the page, often missing context that would make your content stand out.
Should I use Article, NewsArticle or BlogPosting?
Article is the generic parent type and works for almost any long-form content. Use NewsArticle for time-sensitive journalism that you want to appear in Top Stories, since Google specifically rewards that subtype. Use BlogPosting for personal or company blog posts, especially when authorship and publish date matter more than newsworthiness. The generator lets you switch between these types so you can match the schema to the editorial intent of each page.
Which fields are required for valid Article schema?
Google requires headline, image, datePublished and author at minimum, with publisher and dateModified strongly recommended. The headline should match the visible H1, images must be at least 1200 pixels wide for top-stories eligibility, and dates need to be in ISO 8601 format. The generator fills these correctly and warns you when a required value is missing, so the resulting block always passes Google's Rich Results Test on the first try.
Where do I place the JSON-LD block on my page?
Paste the script tag inside the head section of your HTML, although Google will also accept it anywhere in the body. JSON-LD is the recommended format because it sits separately from your visible markup and is easy for editors to maintain. Only include one Article block per page, and make sure every value matches the on-page content exactly. Mismatches between schema and visible content can trigger a manual action for spammy structured data.
How can I test that my Article schema works?
Run the generated block through Google's Rich Results Test at search.google.com/test/rich-results to see whether the page is eligible for article rich results. The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks raw schema.org compliance without Google-specific rules. Once your page is live, use the Search Console enhancement reports to monitor errors at scale and confirm Google has crawled the new markup.
Will Article schema guarantee a rich result?
No structured data is a guarantee. Schema makes your page eligible for rich treatment, but Google still decides whether to show enhanced results based on quality, freshness, authority and user intent. You will get the strongest results when the schema is valid, the visible page matches it, the site has a track record of helpful content, and images meet the recommended dimensions. Treat schema as one important input among many.
