What are Bluesky's post limits?
Bluesky enforces two limits: 300 graphemes (visible characters) and 3,000 bytes. Most posts hit the 300-character limit first, but emoji-heavy or non-Latin script posts can hit the 3,000-byte limit before the visible-character limit. The counter shows both metrics simultaneously so you do not get blocked at submit time.
Why does Bluesky count both graphemes and bytes?
Graphemes match what users see; bytes match storage and protocol overhead in the AT Protocol. A single emoji is 1 grapheme but can be 4 to 12 bytes in UTF-8. Bluesky wants both a friendly visual cap and a hard storage cap. The dual limit affects multilingual users (CJK, Arabic, emoji-heavy posts) more than Latin-only posts.
Do links count toward the byte limit?
Yes. Bluesky does not auto-shorten URLs, so a long URL counts in full toward both limits. Use a link shortener for long URLs or rely on Bluesky's rich-text card preview, which still requires the URL itself in the post body. For very long shareable links, consider posting a short tagline plus a follow-up reply with the URL.
How long should an effective Bluesky post be?
100 to 250 graphemes is the sweet spot for engagement on Bluesky, similar to X. The platform's feed favors substantive but scannable posts. Save longer thoughts for threads (replies to your own post). Bluesky's culture rewards earnest, conversational writing more than polished marketing copy.
Are hashtags supported on Bluesky?
Yes, Bluesky supports hashtags and they help with topical discovery. Use 1 to 3 specific tags per post; stuffing hashtags is uncommon on Bluesky and reads as out of place. The hashtags count toward both the 300-grapheme and 3,000-byte limits.
Can I post longer than 300 graphemes through threads?
Yes. Bluesky supports thread replies to your own post, so you can chain multiple 300-grapheme posts to tell a longer story. Each post in the thread is independently counted. The counter helps you split content cleanly at sentence breaks rather than chopping mid-thought.
