What are the most common social aspect ratios?
Square 1:1 (Instagram feed), portrait 4:5 (Instagram, Facebook feed), vertical 9:16 (Stories, Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts), landscape 16:9 (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn video), pin 2:3 (Pinterest), and Twitter image 16:9 or 1.91:1. The calculator helps you size or crop a source asset to any of these without distortion.
How do I calculate dimensions from an aspect ratio?
For ratio W:H, fix one dimension (usually width) and compute the other: height = width × (H ÷ W). For 9:16 at 1080 wide, height = 1080 × (16 ÷ 9) = 1920. For 4:5 at 1080 wide, height = 1080 × (5 ÷ 4) = 1350. The calculator does this for you and rounds to even pixels for clean encoding.
What is the safe zone in vertical social videos?
For 9:16 content (Stories, Reels, Shorts, TikTok), keep critical visual elements inside a centered 1080x1420 safe zone (roughly 250 pixels of padding top and bottom). Platform UI overlays (caption text, sticker tray, profile bug, action buttons) cover the top and bottom strips. Designing inside the safe zone prevents your call to action from getting hidden.
Can I upload non-standard aspect ratios?
Most platforms accept a range and auto-letterbox or auto-crop content outside it. Instagram feed accepts 1.91:1 to 4:5; videos outside that range get cropped. TikTok and Shorts strongly prefer 9:16. Uploading a 1:1 to a vertical platform leaves visible black bars and looks unprofessional. Use the calculator to confirm fit before uploading.
Why do my videos get compressed when uploaded?
Every social platform re-encodes uploaded video to its target codec and bitrate, which softens detail. Mitigate by uploading at the platform's recommended resolution (not larger), using H.264 high-profile, 8 to 12 Mbps bitrate, and AAC stereo audio. The aspect ratio calculator pairs naturally with bitrate guidelines to deliver clean uploads.
Should I shoot in 4K and downscale?
Yes when possible. Shooting in 4K (3840x2160 or 4096x2160) and downscaling to 1080 produces sharper, less noisy output than recording natively at 1080. Use the calculator to confirm the destination crop and aspect, then export at the target dimension to avoid uploading unnecessarily large files that the platform will re-compress anyway.
