What thumbnail sizes does YouTube generate per video?
YouTube auto-generates several sizes: maxresdefault (1280x720), sddefault (640x480), hqdefault (480x360), mqdefault (320x180), and default (120x90). The grabber returns all available sizes so you can pick the right one for your use. Maxres is the cleanest for embedding and reference; smaller sizes save bandwidth in feeds and thumbnails.
Why do some videos lack a maxresdefault thumbnail?
maxresdefault is generated only for videos uploaded at or above 720p resolution. Older or lower-resolution uploads only have sddefault and smaller. The grabber gracefully falls back to the next available size when maxres does not exist. You can still upscale sddefault for design work, though quality suffers visibly.
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
Thumbnails are public assets served from Google's CDN, and downloading them for fair-use cases (journalism, criticism, blog illustration with attribution) is generally accepted. Republishing a thumbnail as if it were your own original work or using it commercially without the creator's permission can violate copyright. Always credit the source video.
Can I get auto-generated thumbnail variants?
YouTube generates three auto-snapshots per video at standard intervals plus the creator-uploaded custom thumbnail. The grabber typically returns the custom thumbnail (the one displayed publicly) plus the auto-snapshots labeled 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg. The auto-snapshots are useful when you need a frame from inside the video without watching it.
How do I extract the video ID from a YouTube URL?
Standard URLs use `youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID` or shortened `youtu.be/VIDEOID`. Shorts use `youtube.com/shorts/VIDEOID`. Embeds use `youtube.com/embed/VIDEOID`. Quality grabbers parse all formats automatically, including playlist URLs, channel URLs, and timestamped links. Paste any YouTube link and the tool extracts the ID for you.
What format and resolution should I download?
YouTube serves thumbnails as JPG. Maxresdefault at 1280x720 is the highest available; do not upscale it for print or large displays without quality loss. For blog posts and social shares, maxres is more than enough. Hqdefault (480x360) is fine for compact UI elements. Always download from the canonical URL rather than scraping a screenshot.
