What rules does the slug generator apply?
It lowercases the input, replaces every space with a hyphen, removes punctuation and quotation marks, transliterates accented Latin letters to their plain ASCII counterparts, and collapses multiple hyphens into one. Common stop words like a, an, the can optionally be stripped to keep slugs short. The result is safe for URLs, file names, and CSS class names.
Why are slugs important for SEO?
A descriptive slug tells both search engines and users what the page is about before they click. URLs containing target keywords get small ranking and click-through benefits compared to opaque IDs or auto-generated paths. Short slugs are easier to share, fit better in social previews, and copy reliably from print or voice channels.
How does it handle non-Latin scripts?
Most generators transliterate characters to ASCII when a sensible mapping exists - so München becomes munchen and Ω becomes o. CJK scripts have no obvious Latin transliteration, so the tool either drops them, romanizes via a pinyin-style table, or leaves them encoded. Some platforms allow Unicode slugs natively, which removes the need to transliterate at all.
Should slugs include the date or category?
Embedded dates pin a URL to a publication time, which can become outdated when content is updated. Categories add structure but bloat the URL and make site reorganization harder. Modern best practice is short topic-only slugs at the root of the domain or under a single content folder. Optimize for permanence and clarity over hierarchy.
How long should a slug be?
Aim for three to five meaningful words, roughly 40 to 60 characters. Long slugs get truncated in search results and look noisy when shared. If your title is naturally long, drop filler words rather than abbreviating arbitrarily. URL paths over 75 characters tend to fold awkwardly in chat apps and email clients.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
Yes, but always set up a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one. Without the redirect, every link, share, and bookmark to the old URL returns 404 and you lose accumulated SEO equity. Most CMS platforms manage redirects automatically when you change a slug, but verify the rule is active before assuming the change is safe.
