Why would I convert a JPG to a PNG?
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which JPG cannot do. Converting a JPG to a PNG is useful when you want to edit the image without losing more quality with each save, or when you plan to remove the background and need transparency. PNG also handles solid colour areas without artefacts, so screenshots of websites or apps look cleaner as PNG. Be aware that the file size will grow significantly compared with the JPG you started from.
Will the converted PNG look better than the original JPG?
No, converting cannot recover detail that was lost during the original JPG compression. The PNG simply preserves whatever the JPG looked like at that moment, blocky artefacts and all. If your goal is a higher quality image, you need a better source rather than a format conversion. Where PNG helps is preventing further quality loss during subsequent edits, since saving as PNG repeatedly does not introduce new artefacts the way saving as JPG repeatedly does.
How much larger is the PNG compared to the JPG?
Depending on the picture, the PNG can be anywhere from two to ten times larger than the original JPG. Photographs with lots of fine detail show the biggest jump in size, while flat graphics with solid colours are sometimes only slightly bigger. The tool shows both sizes in the preview so you can decide whether the trade off is worth it. If the file is for the web, consider WebP as a smaller modern alternative that still supports transparency.
Can I add transparency when converting JPG to PNG?
The conversion itself cannot detect a background to remove because JPG has no transparency information to work from. After converting, you can use a separate background remover or the photo censor tool to make specific areas transparent. The PNG format supports an alpha channel, so any edits that introduce transparency will be preserved when you save again. Combining this conversion with a background removal step is a common workflow for product photos that need a clean cutout.
Can I batch convert several JPGs to PNGs?
Yes. Drop multiple JPG files onto the tool and each is converted to PNG in turn. You can download them individually or as a ZIP. Because PNG is lossless and JPG already lost data when it was first encoded, the conversion is a clean copy of the existing JPG pixel data. Batch mode is helpful when an editor or platform you use only accepts PNG and you have a folder full of JPG sources to prepare quickly.
Does the conversion happen on my device or your server?
It happens entirely on your device. The browser decodes the JPG, then encodes the same pixel data as a PNG, all without any network call. This protects private images and avoids any upload time. It also means you can use the tool with no internet connection once the page has loaded. The only limit is your browser memory, which is plenty for everyday photos and screenshots but may struggle with very large multi gigabyte files.
