Does Google really render JavaScript like a browser?
Yes, but with caveats. Googlebot uses a recent Chromium engine and executes JS, but rendering is queued separately from crawling and resource-constrained. The safest pattern is server-side rendering or static generation for SEO-critical content; client-only React or Vue without SSR remains risky for organic search.
Should I use the Googlebot user agent for testing?

Can I use the spider simulator to find cloaking issues?
Yes. Compare the Googlebot UA fetch with a regular browser fetch of the same URL. Significant content differences indicate cloaking, whether intentional or accidental. Common accidental cloaking sources: geo-IP redirects that misidentify Googlebot, paywalls served differently to bots, A/B testing tools that show different variants, or CDN caches keyed on user agent. Cloaking violations can trigger manual actions, so audit periodically.
Does Google still use a mobile spider for indexing?
Yes. Since 2023 Google has been fully mobile-first: the smartphone Googlebot is the primary indexer for nearly all sites. Always test with the mobile user agent first. Desktop-only content, hidden mobile menus, and responsive layouts that hide important text on small screens can directly cost rankings.
