What is FAQPage schema and who can use it?
FAQPage is a schema.org type for pages that answer a list of questions, where the answers are written by the site owner rather than by users. Adding it can produce expandable FAQ rich results in Google, taking up more SERP real estate and answering questions before the click. Google's policy now restricts these rich results to authoritative government and health sites, but the markup is still useful for AI overviews, voice search and other downstream consumers.
Is FAQ rich result eligibility still available?
In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known authoritative sources such as government and health sites. Most commercial sites no longer see the expanded snippet, even with perfect markup. That said, FAQPage schema still helps with content understanding, AI summaries, internal site search and other search engines. Add it where it genuinely matches the page, but do not rely on rich snippets as the only justification for the work.
What are the rules for the questions and answers?
Each question must be a real Question with a single accepted answer, and the answer must be visible on the page exactly as it appears in the schema. Do not use FAQ schema for user-generated questions, product reviews, lists of how-to steps or marketing claims. Both the question and answer can contain limited HTML such as links, lists and basic formatting. Misuse of FAQ schema is one of the most common reasons for manual structured data penalties.
How many FAQs should I include on a page?
There is no hard limit, but quality matters more than quantity. Five to ten focused questions covering genuine user concerns work better than dozens of thin entries. Each answer should add real value rather than restate the question. Group related questions on dedicated pages instead of dumping every FAQ on the home page. The generator lets you add or remove rows freely so you can tune the list to the page's topic.
How do I test my FAQ structured data?
Validate the JSON-LD with the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org for raw schema compliance, and Google's Rich Results Test to see whether your page is eligible for the FAQ rich result given its current eligibility rules. After publishing, monitor the FAQ enhancement report in Search Console, which surfaces both errors that block markup and warnings about ineligible pages so you can fix issues quickly across a large site.
Can FAQ schema hurt my SEO if used incorrectly?
Yes. Google has issued manual actions against sites that mark up promotional content, advertising or unrelated text as FAQs. Hiding the questions and answers behind tabs that load only on click, or emitting markup that does not match the visible page, also breaks the rules. Stick to genuine question-and-answer content, render it directly in the HTML, and keep schema and visible text in sync. Used correctly, FAQ schema remains safe and helpful.
