What is HowTo schema designed for?
HowTo schema describes step-by-step instructions for completing a task, such as installing a faucet, baking bread or setting up a router. Each step has its own name, text and optional image, and the overall guide can include tools, supplies, total time and a final result. Google historically used this markup to display image-rich how-to cards, particularly on mobile, making the page far more attractive than a plain text snippet in the SERP.
Are HowTo rich results still shown in Google search?
In late 2023 Google restricted HowTo rich results to desktop only and then largely retired the visual treatment, so most sites no longer see the dedicated card. The schema remains valid and is still useful for AI summaries, voice answers and other search engines. Add HowTo markup where the content really is a procedural guide, but base your business case on long-term content understanding rather than on a guaranteed Google rich result.
What information do I need for each step?
Each HowToStep needs a name and a text description, and it strongly benefits from an image and an optional URL fragment that anchors directly to the step on the page. Tools and supplies should be modelled as HowToTool and HowToSupply items at the top level. Add totalTime in ISO 8601 duration format, for example PT30M for thirty minutes. The generator validates each field as you type so the output is always Rich Results Test ready.
When should I use HowTo versus Recipe schema?
Use Recipe whenever the instructions produce food or drink, since Google has dedicated recipe rich results, ratings and Google Discover treatment that HowTo cannot match. Reserve HowTo for non-food procedures such as DIY repairs, software setup, crafts and cleaning. Mixing the two on a single page is not allowed. Picking the right type is the single most important decision when marking up procedural content because it determines which rich features your page can win.
How do I validate HowTo structured data?
Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test, which still parses HowTo even when it does not display the rich card, and use the Schema Markup Validator for general schema.org compliance. Search Console no longer shows a HowTo enhancement report, so monitor the URL Inspection tool to confirm Google has discovered and parsed your markup. Manual spot checks on a representative sample of pages are usually enough for most sites.
Can I include video alongside HowTo steps?
Yes. You can embed a VideoObject for the overall guide or attach video to individual steps using the video property on a HowToStep. Make sure the video file or page is publicly accessible and that the duration, thumbnail and description are accurate. Combining HowTo with video markup gives Google the strongest signal that your page is a true tutorial, which can help it surface in video carousels and on platforms beyond traditional Google Search.
