How do I rearrange pages in a PDF?
Drop your PDF onto the tool and it shows a thumbnail grid of every page. Drag any thumbnail to a new position and the others slide out of the way to make room. You can also select several pages with shift-click and move them as a group. When the order looks right, click save and the reordered PDF is built locally and offered for download. The original file stays untouched on your disk.
Does the reorder tool send my PDF to a server?
No. The reorder tool is fully browser based and uses pdf-lib to rebuild the document with the new page order. Your file is read into memory, manipulated in place and then written back out, all without a network request. This is important for confidential documents where even a temporary upload would be a problem. You can also use the tool offline after the page has finished loading once.
Can I reorder pages in a very large PDF?
You can, but rendering a thumbnail grid for hundreds of pages takes memory and time. Documents up to about 200 pages reorder smoothly on most laptops. For longer files, the thumbnails appear in batches as you scroll. If the browser becomes sluggish, close other tabs or split the PDF first, reorder the pieces and merge them back. The actual rebuild step is fast even for large files, it is the visual preview that costs the most.
Will reordering pages reduce the quality of the document?
No. Reordering only changes the sequence in which pages are referenced, the actual page content is copied over without any re-encoding. Text remains crisp, images keep their original resolution and embedded fonts are preserved. The output file is essentially the same size as the input, with only the page table rewritten. This makes the operation safe to repeat as many times as you like without ever losing fidelity.
Why are some pages greyed out and not draggable?
A page may be greyed out if the source PDF is password protected or uses an unusual encoding that pdf-lib cannot fully parse. Remove the password first with the password remover tool, then return to the reorder. If a single page fails to render its thumbnail, you can usually still drag it because only the preview is missing. If even that fails, repair the PDF in a desktop editor and try again.
Can I delete pages while I am reordering?
Yes, every thumbnail has a small delete icon that removes that page from the output. This lets you reorder and trim the document in one pass instead of switching tools. If you change your mind, an undo button restores recently removed pages. When you are done, save the result and download the cleaned up, reordered PDF. For more elaborate page surgery, the dedicated page deleter tool offers a few extra options.
