How do clothing sizes differ between US and EU?
A US women's size 8 typically equals an EU 38 and a UK 12. For men, a US 40 chest is an EU 50. The numbers represent different things: US women's sizes are arbitrary, EU sizes are based on body measurements in cm, and UK sizes are similar to US but two numbers higher. The converter maps the standard charts.
Why do brands fit so differently?
Sizing is voluntary, not regulated. Each brand uses its own block patterns and target body shape, so a "size 10" varies widely. Vanity sizing has also pushed labelled sizes down over decades. The converter gives a baseline conversion based on standard charts, but always check the brand's specific size guide for accurate fit.
What is the difference between Japanese and US sizes?
Japanese sizing typically runs smaller than US for the same label. A Japanese L is roughly a US M. Japanese sizes are often based on actual body measurements in cm. Brands like Uniqlo include both labels for clarity. The converter handles JP-US and JP-EU conversions for tops, bottoms, and dresses based on standard JIS body measurement charts.
How do I measure my size correctly?
Use a soft tape measure. For tops, measure the chest at the widest point and the waist at the narrowest. For bottoms, measure waist, hip, and inseam. Always measure over light clothing or undergarments, keep the tape level, and do not pull tight. Then compare to the brand's size chart, not just the converter's standard chart.
Are men's and women's sizes interchangeable?
No. Men's and women's patterns differ in shoulder width, waist-to-hip ratio, and proportions. A "size 38" in men's is usually a chest or waist measurement in inches, while a women's 38 is an EU dress size. The converter has separate charts for each gender. For unisex items, follow the brand's specific guidance.
Should I size up or size down internationally?
It depends on the destination. Asian sizing tends to run smaller, so US shoppers often size up by 1-2 steps when buying from Japanese or Korean brands. European sizing fits closer to American but with different cut. When in doubt, check the cm measurements on the brand's page rather than relying purely on the label number.
