How does the date difference calculator work?
Enter a start date and an end date, and the calculator returns the gap in days, weeks, months, years, and business days. It uses real calendar arithmetic, so it accounts for leap years and varying month lengths. This is useful for project planning, age calculations, contract terms, and figuring out how many days a leave or rental covers.
How are business days calculated?
Business days exclude Saturdays and Sundays, leaving Monday through Friday. So a 14-day period typically contains 10 business days. Public holidays are not always factored in unless the calculator has a country setting. For exact figures, manually subtract bank holidays for your jurisdiction. This matters for contract delivery dates and SLAs that exclude weekends.
Why do months count differently than weeks?
A week is always 7 days, but a month varies from 28 to 31 days. The calculator counts complete months between dates, then adds leftover days. So 1 January to 15 February is "1 month and 14 days", not "1.45 months". This matches how most people speak about durations and how legal documents define monthly periods.
Can I include or exclude the end date?
Most calculators offer both modes. "Days between" typically excludes the end date, so 1 to 5 January is 4 days. "Days inclusive" includes both ends, giving 5 days. The right choice depends on context: hotel nights are usually exclusive (check-in to check-out), while leave or vacation days are usually inclusive.
How does the calculator handle leap years?
It uses the actual calendar, so 29 February is counted only in leap years (years divisible by 4, except centuries unless divisible by 400). A span that crosses a leap year picks up one extra day automatically. So 1 March 2024 to 1 March 2025 is 365 days, but 1 March 2023 to 1 March 2024 is 366 days.
Can I calculate the difference in hours and minutes?
Some versions of the tool accept date-time inputs and return hours, minutes, and seconds in addition to days. For pure dates without times, the calculator assumes midnight at both ends. If you need precise time-of-day differences (for SLAs or shift planning), enter both timestamps explicitly and the tool will return the elapsed duration to the second.
