How do I convert oven Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply Celsius by 9/5 and add 32. So a 180 C oven is 356 F, but most US recipes round to 350 F. A 200 C oven is 400 F. Oven dials usually have 25 F increments and 10 C increments, so the converter snaps to the nearest dial setting if you choose. Exact temperature rarely matters for typical baking.
What is Gas Mark?
Gas Mark is a UK scale for gas oven dials, running from 1/4 to 9. Gas Mark 4 is 180 C / 350 F, the standard for most baking. Each step is roughly 14 C or 25 F. The scale was widely used in older UK recipes and gas appliances. The converter translates Gas Mark to Celsius and Fahrenheit instantly.
What temperature is "moderate" or "hot"?
Older recipes use words like cool (140 C / 275 F), moderate (180 C / 350 F), hot (220 C / 425 F), and very hot (240 C / 475 F). The converter maps these descriptive terms to numeric values used by modern ovens, which removes guesswork when cooking from a vintage cookbook or a handwritten family recipe.
How do I adjust for a fan oven?
Fan (convection) ovens cook faster because the air circulates. Reduce the temperature by 20 C (or about 35 F), or shorten the time by 10-15 percent. So a recipe calling for 200 C conventional becomes 180 C fan. The converter usually offers a "fan" toggle that applies this offset automatically.
Why are oven temperatures often rounded?
Home ovens fluctuate by 10-15 C around the set point, so rounding to the nearest 5 or 10 makes no practical difference. Recipes typically use round numbers (180 C, 200 C, 350 F, 400 F) rather than exact mathematical conversions. The converter shows the precise value but suggests the dial-friendly equivalent when needed.
Is preheating necessary?
Yes, for most baking. Cakes, breads, and pastries depend on hitting target temperature when the food enters, so preheat for 10-15 minutes. The converter does not change preheating advice, but it ensures the target temperature is correct in the units your oven uses. Use an oven thermometer if accuracy matters; built-in sensors can be off by 10-20 C.
