How do US, UK, and EU shoe sizes differ?
A US men's 9 is roughly a UK 8 and an EU 42. The systems use different reference lengths: UK starts at 0 for a 4 inch foot and adds 1/3 inch per size, US adds 1 to the UK number for men, and EU uses Paris points (2/3 cm). The converter handles all three with a single chart.
What is the relationship between shoe size and foot length in cm?
Most accurate sizing is in cm. A 26 cm foot is roughly a US men's 8, UK 7, EU 41, and JP 26.0. Japan uses cm directly as the size number, which is the easiest system to use. Measure your foot length on a flat surface in the evening (when feet are slightly larger) for the best fit.
Why are men's and women's sizes labelled differently?
In the US, women's sizes are 1.5 numbers higher than men's for the same length. So a women's 8.5 fits the same foot as a men's 7. UK sizes use the same number for both, distinguished by "ladies" or "gents". EU does the same. The converter accounts for the gender offset when switching between US and other systems.
How does Japanese shoe sizing work?
Japan uses foot length in cm directly. So a 25.5 cm foot wears size 25.5. This is the simplest and most logical system. It matches one-to-one with foot length and removes the abstraction of US, UK, and EU numbering. Many international shoe charts include the cm column as the most reliable cross-reference.
How should I measure my feet?
Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall. Mark the tip of the longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark in cm. Do this for both feet and use the larger value. Add 0.5 to 1 cm for comfort, especially for sneakers. Then look up the cm value in the converter to find your size in any system.
Why does the same size fit differently across brands?
Shoe lasts (the moulds shoes are built on) vary by brand, model, and country. Width, toe box shape, and arch height all change the fit. Nike tends to run narrow, New Balance runs wider, and many European brands have a slimmer last. The converter gives the standard size mapping; always read brand-specific reviews or try them on when possible.
