How does the hours calculator work?
Enter a start time and an end time, and the calculator returns the difference in hours and minutes. It handles times that cross midnight by treating the end time as the next day if it is earlier than the start. You can also subtract a break duration to get net working hours.
What if my shift crosses midnight?
The calculator detects this automatically. If your end time (say 2 AM) is earlier than your start time (10 PM), it assumes you crossed midnight and adds 24 hours before subtracting. So a 10 PM to 6 AM shift correctly returns 8 hours, not negative 16 hours.
How do I handle unpaid breaks?
Subtract them from the total. Many calculators include a break field where you enter minutes (typically 30 or 60). A 9 AM to 5 PM shift with a 30-minute lunch is 7.5 paid hours. If your break is paid, do not subtract it, and the gross total is your paid hours.
Can I add up several shifts at once?
Some hours calculators support multiple rows for a weekly timesheet. Enter each shift's start and end, and the tool sums them into a total. This is useful for hourly workers tracking weekly hours, freelancers logging client time, or anyone calculating overtime eligibility (typically over 40 hours per week in the US).
Should I use 12-hour or 24-hour format?
Either works as long as you are consistent. The 24-hour format (military time) avoids AM/PM confusion: 14:30 is unambiguously 2:30 PM. For shifts crossing noon or midnight, 24-hour is safer. The calculator accepts both, but mixing them in one calculation can cause errors.
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Multiply the decimal portion by 60. So 7.75 hours equals 7 hours and 45 minutes (0.75 times 60). Conversely, divide minutes by 60 to get the decimal: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. Payroll systems usually want decimals; humans usually want hours and minutes. The calculator shows both.
