How does Twitter or X share ad revenue with creators?
X pays Premium subscribers a share of the advertising revenue from ads shown in replies to their posts. Eligibility requires Premium, at least 500 followers, and 5 million organic impressions in the past 3 months. Payouts are calculated on impressions in reply threads from verified users, not your main feed views.
How is the revenue estimated?
The calculator multiplies your monthly impressions by an estimated revenue per mille (RPM, dollars per 1,000 impressions). Reported RPMs vary widely: typical creators see $0.50 to $5 per 1,000 reply-thread impressions, with niche, high-engagement accounts at the upper end. The estimate is a rough projection, not a guarantee from X.
Why are real payouts often lower than estimates?
Only impressions from verified Premium users in reply threads are monetized, not your total impressions count. A post with 1 million views might only have 50,000 monetized impressions. Ad fill rates also vary, and X takes a cut. Treat any estimator as an upper bound and expect the real payout to be a fraction.
Do I need to pay for X Premium to earn?
Yes. As of the current creator program, you must subscribe to a paid Premium tier (Basic, Premium, or Premium Plus) to be eligible for ad revenue sharing. The subscription cost is deducted from your earnings, so accounts with low impressions may net negative or break even after the fee.
How often does X pay out?
Payouts are processed roughly monthly once you cross the minimum threshold (currently around $50). They are sent via Stripe to a connected bank account. Earnings below the threshold roll forward. Tax forms are issued at year-end if your earnings cross the local reporting threshold (e.g., $600 in the US for 1099 reporting).
Can I increase my earnings?
Post topics that drive replies from verified users, since only reply-thread impressions are monetized. Engagement bait can backfire by reducing trust and unfollows. The most consistent earners post timely, opinionated takes that spark verified-user discussion. Pure broadcasts to non-verified followers earn far less per impression.
