What is a standard tip percentage?
In the United States, the standard tip is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down restaurants, with 18% being the most common default. Bartenders typically get $1-2 per drink or 15-20%, and delivery drivers 10-15%. In countries like the UK, Australia and most of Europe, tipping is optional or built into the bill, with 10% considered generous.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount, since the tax is not part of the service. However, many people simply tip on the total because it's easier to calculate and only adds a small amount. Our calculator lets you enter whichever amount you prefer.
How do I split a bill evenly between people?
Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. Use the "Split between" slider in this calculator to do it automatically - it shows the exact amount each person owes including their share of the tip.
What if the service was poor - should I still tip?
In most US sit-down restaurants, servers earn a sub-minimum wage that depends on tips, so leaving 0% sends a strong message but can hurt their income unfairly. A more proportional response: drop to 10% and speak to the manager about the issue. For truly bad service, leaving 5-10% with feedback is more constructive than nothing.
How do I round the tip to a nice number?
Use the "Rounding" option above. "Round total up" rounds the final amount up to the next whole dollar (good for cash). "Round total to nearest" picks the closest whole dollar - useful when you want to leave a clean total on the receipt.
Does the calculator work for any currency?
Yes - pick any of USD, EUR, GBP, INR, CAD, AUD or JPY from the currency dropdown. The math is identical, only the symbol and formatting change. Tipping customs vary by country though, so use the percentage that's standard for your location.
