What is BAC and how is it estimated?
BAC stands for Blood Alcohol Content, the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream. The Widmark formula estimates BAC from grams of alcohol consumed, body weight, and a gender-based distribution constant (around 0.68 for men, 0.55 for women). It then subtracts about 0.015 percent per hour for metabolism. This calculator uses that formula.
How accurate is a BAC calculator?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. Real BAC depends on many variables the formula cannot capture: food in stomach, hydration, medications, fatigue, individual enzyme variation. A breathalyzer or blood test is the only accurate way to measure BAC. Use the calculator for awareness and planning, never as proof you are under a legal limit.
Why does gender affect BAC?
Women generally have a higher proportion of body fat and less body water than men of the same weight, plus lower levels of the alcohol-metabolizing enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. The same drink in the same body weight produces a higher BAC in a woman than a man. The Widmark constant adjusts for this difference.
What counts as one standard drink?
In the US, one standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol: a 12 oz beer at 5 percent ABV, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12 percent, or 1.5 oz of 80-proof spirits. Different countries use different definitions (the UK uses 8 grams). The calculator typically defaults to the US standard.
When is it safe to drive?
The legal limit is 0.08 percent in most US states (0.05 percent in many other countries, lower for commercial and underage drivers). Impairment begins well below the legal limit. The calculator estimates when you cross back below a threshold, but never drive based on a calculator alone. Wait longer than predicted, or do not drink and drive.
How long does it take alcohol to leave your system?
The body metabolizes about one standard drink per hour, regardless of weight or gender. Coffee, cold showers, and food do not speed this up. After heavy drinking, BAC can stay elevated for 8 to 12 hours and trace alcohol can remain measurable for longer. Sleeping helps you feel better but does not accelerate clearance.
