How does the U.S. Navy method estimate body fat?
It uses circumference measurements: neck and waist for men, plus hips for women, combined with height. The formula was developed by the Navy in the 1980s as a low-cost alternative to skinfold calipers. It calculates body fat percentage from these tape measurements with reasonable accuracy for most adults, typically within 3 to 4 percent of more advanced methods.
How accurate is the Navy method compared to DEXA scans?
DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, and BodPod are the gold standards and are accurate within 1 to 2 percent. The Navy method usually falls within 3 to 4 percentage points of DEXA for most people. It is less accurate for very muscular athletes, very lean individuals, and people with unusual body proportions. Treat the result as a useful estimate, not a precise measurement.
What are healthy body fat ranges?
For men, essential fat is 2 to 5 percent, athletes 6 to 13, fitness 14 to 17, average 18 to 24, and obese 25 plus. For women the numbers run higher because of biological needs: essential 10 to 13, athletes 14 to 20, fitness 21 to 24, average 25 to 31, and obese 32 plus. These ranges come from the American Council on Exercise.
How should I take the measurements correctly?
Measure first thing in the morning before eating or drinking. Use a flexible tape, keep it level and snug but not compressed. Neck is measured below the larynx with the tape sloping slightly downward. Waist is at the navel for men and at the narrowest point for women. Hips are at the widest point of the buttocks. Take each measurement twice and use the average.
Why does my body fat percentage seem high even though I look lean?
The Navy method assumes typical body proportions. If you have a thicker neck from training, a long torso, or naturally narrow hips, the formula can over- or underestimate. Visual leanness depends on muscle definition and where fat is stored, not just total percentage. If the number does not match the mirror, try a second method like skinfold calipers or a smart scale and compare.
Is body fat percentage a better health indicator than BMI?
Generally yes, because BMI cannot tell muscle from fat. A bodybuilder and an obese person can share a BMI but have very different health profiles. However, body fat percentage alone does not capture where the fat is stored, and visceral fat around organs is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. For a full health picture, talk to your doctor about waist-to-hip ratio and metabolic markers too.
