How is my daily calorie need calculated?
The tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), then multiplies it by an activity factor to give Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Sedentary uses 1.2, lightly active 1.375, moderately active 1.55, very active 1.725, and extra active 1.9. The result is the approximate calories your body burns in a day at your current weight and activity level.
Why does Mifflin-St Jeor give different results than Harris-Benedict?
Harris-Benedict was developed in 1919 and tends to overestimate calorie needs by 5 to 15 percent for modern populations. Mifflin-St Jeor was published in 1990 using more representative subjects and is now considered the most accurate general-purpose formula by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For most healthy adults the Mifflin number is closer to real-world energy use.
How accurate is a calorie calculator for weight loss?
It is an estimate, typically within 10 percent of your true TDEE. Real metabolism varies with muscle mass, hormones, sleep, stress, medications, and even gut bacteria. Use the number as a starting point, track your weight for two to three weeks, and adjust intake by 100 to 200 calories if you are not seeing the change you expected. The formula cannot replace measured data.
Should I eat the calorie target on rest days too?
If you picked an activity level that already averages your week (including rest days), then yes, eat the same target every day. If you selected an activity level that reflects only training days, you should reduce intake slightly on rest days. Most people find consistent daily intake easier to manage than cycling, and weekly average is what actually drives weight change.
Is this tool safe for everyone?
It gives general estimates for healthy adults and is not medical advice. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, over 65, recovering from surgery, or living with diabetes, thyroid disorders, eating disorders, or other chronic conditions should not use generic formulas to guide intake. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet.
Why are men's calorie needs higher than women's?
Men typically have more lean muscle mass and less body fat at the same weight, and muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula reflects this by adding 5 for men and subtracting 161 for women in the final step. The gap narrows for very muscular women and shrinks further with age as muscle mass declines in both sexes.
