Why does this calculator show four different ideal weights?
Devine (1974), Hamwi (1964), Robinson (1983), and Miller (1983) are four widely cited formulas, each developed for a different purpose. Devine and Hamwi were originally created for medication dosing, not health goals. Robinson and Miller were refined later from larger population data. The four results usually fall within a few kilograms of each other, giving you a reasonable range rather than a single fixed number.
Which ideal weight formula should I trust most?
No single formula is universally best. Robinson and Miller tend to be more representative of modern populations than Devine or Hamwi. For most adults, the average of all four is a sensible starting estimate. If you want a more individualized target, BMI range, body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio together give a fuller picture than any ideal weight formula on its own.
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal body weight formulas were designed for medical purposes like drug dosing, not as health prescriptions. A healthy weight is a range, often expressed as BMI 18.5 to 24.9, and depends on muscle mass, body composition, and personal medical history. You can be healthy somewhat above or below your calculated ideal weight, especially if you are muscular or naturally small-framed.
Do these formulas work for very short or very tall people?
They become less reliable at the extremes. Devine and Hamwi were built around heights between 152 and 183 cm and can give odd results outside that range. Modern formulas like Robinson and Miller handle extremes a little better but still have limitations. If you are under 5 feet or over 6 foot 4, treat the result as approximate and rely more on body composition measurements.
Should I aim for the lowest of the four numbers?
No. Aiming for the lowest formula result can push you toward underweight, especially if you are athletic. The four numbers form a healthy range. Pick a target near the middle, consider how you feel and perform at different weights, and consult a doctor or dietitian before pursuing a weight that is significantly different from where you are now.
How do these formulas handle muscle mass?
They do not. Every formula here uses only height (and Hamwi adjusts slightly for frame size). Two people the same height get the same ideal weight regardless of muscle. This is the biggest limitation: a muscular athlete will often weigh more than the calculated ideal yet have lower body fat than someone at the formula weight. Combine ideal weight with body fat percentage for a meaningful target.
