How does the calculator predict ovulation?
It assumes ovulation occurs 14 days before your next expected period. So for a 28-day cycle ovulation is on day 14, for a 30-day cycle it is day 16, and for a 26-day cycle it is day 12. The calculator takes your last period start date and average cycle length, then estimates the most likely ovulation day and the surrounding fertile window.
What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is roughly 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, while the egg lives only 12 to 24 hours after release. The two days right before ovulation and the ovulation day itself are the most fertile. The calculator highlights this whole window so you can plan accordingly.
How accurate is calendar-based ovulation prediction?
Moderately accurate for women with regular cycles and quite unreliable for irregular cycles. Studies show only about 30 percent of women ovulate exactly on the predicted day. Combining the calculator with ovulation predictor kits (LH strips), basal body temperature tracking, or cervical mucus observation gives a much better picture. The calendar alone is a starting point, not a definitive answer.
Can I use this to avoid pregnancy?
Calendar tracking alone is one of the least reliable forms of contraception, with typical-use failure rates around 24 percent per year. Sperm survival, irregular cycles, and unexpected ovulation make it risky. If you want to prevent pregnancy, use a clinically validated method (condoms, IUDs, hormonal contraception) and consult your doctor. This calculator is intended to help with conception, not to replace contraception.
Why might my actual ovulation day be different?
Stress, illness, travel, weight changes, hormonal shifts, and underlying conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders can shift ovulation by several days or skip it entirely. The 14-day rule is just a population average. Your own luteal phase might be 12 or 16 days. Tracking basal body temperature for a few cycles will reveal your personal pattern more accurately than any calendar formula.
When should I see a doctor about fertility?
If you are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success, or 6 months if you are 35 or older, talk to your doctor or a fertility specialist. Also seek advice sooner if you have very irregular cycles, no periods, or a history of miscarriage, pelvic surgery, or known reproductive conditions. This calculator does not diagnose fertility issues.
