How is sales tax different from VAT or GST?
Sales tax is a single-stage tax charged only at the final retail sale, common in the United States. VAT and GST are multi-stage taxes collected at every step of production, with businesses claiming back tax paid on inputs. The math from the consumer side is similar (price plus a percentage) but the underlying system and reporting are very different.
Why do US sales tax rates vary so much?
The United States has no federal sales tax. Each state sets its own rate, and counties and cities can add local rates on top. Combined rates range from 0 percent in states like Delaware, Montana, and Oregon to over 10 percent in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama. Always check the rate for the exact ZIP code where the sale happens.
Do I add tax for online purchases?
Since the 2018 Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, most online retailers must collect sales tax based on the buyer's shipping address, not the seller's location. The rate you enter should match the destination, not where the store is based. The calculator just applies the rate you give it, so put in the correct destination rate.
Can the calculator reverse-calculate the pre-tax price?
Yes. If you know the total paid and the tax rate, switch to inclusive mode and the calculator extracts the original price. The formula is total divided by (1 plus rate). This is handy for expense reports where you have the receipt total but need the pre-tax amount for your books.
Are food and clothing taxed?
It depends entirely on the state. Many US states exempt unprepared groceries and prescription drugs. A few exempt clothing under a certain price. Restaurants are almost always taxed and sometimes at a higher prepared-food rate. The calculator does not know about exemptions, so only enter taxable items into it.
How do I handle multiple items with different tax rates?
Calculate each rate group separately and add the results. For example, a basket with taxable goods at 8 percent and exempt food should be split: run the taxable subtotal through the calculator, leave the food alone, then add the food back at the end. Mixing different rates in one calculation will give the wrong answer.
