What is a sleep cycle?
A complete sleep cycle is roughly 90 minutes long and contains light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. A full night of rest typically includes 4 to 6 cycles. Waking up at the end of a cycle (during light sleep) leaves you feeling refreshed; waking mid-cycle (especially in deep sleep) feels groggy and disorienting.
How does the calculator pick the best bedtime?
You enter when you need to wake up. The calculator counts backward in 90-minute increments and adds 15 minutes for falling asleep. It returns several options: 6 cycles for an ideal 9 hours, 5 cycles for 7.5 hours, or 4 cycles for 6 hours. Aim for the latest one your schedule allows.
Is 7.5 hours enough sleep?
For most adults, 7 to 9 hours is the recommended range. Five complete 90-minute cycles equals 7.5 hours, which falls in the healthy zone for many people. However, individual needs vary: some people genuinely need 9 hours, others function well on 6.5. Track how you feel after waking, not just the total hours.
Why do I feel worse after 9 hours than 7?
Probably because you woke up mid-cycle. If 9 hours is partway through cycle 7, you interrupt deep sleep and feel groggy. Setting an alarm for 7.5 or 9 hours from your sleep onset (not lights-out) tends to wake you in light sleep, where you feel rested. The calculator helps avoid this mismatch.
Are 90-minute cycles the same for everyone?
No. Cycle length varies between 70 and 110 minutes per person and changes slightly through the night. The 90-minute rule is the average. The calculator uses 90 minutes because it is the population midpoint, but a small adjustment in either direction may suit you better. Experiment for a week to find your number.
What is the 15-minute fall-asleep buffer?
Healthy sleepers fall asleep within 10 to 20 minutes of getting into bed. The calculator adds 15 as a default, so the suggested bedtime accounts for this. If you regularly take much longer to fall asleep (over 30 minutes), it may indicate insomnia or stress and is worth discussing with a doctor.
