How do I create a word search from my own list?
Type or paste your words into the input box, one per line, then choose a grid size and click generate. The tool places each word horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (forwards or backwards depending on your settings) and fills the empty cells with random letters. Words that do not fit are flagged so you can shorten them or pick a larger grid.
What is a good grid size for my word list?
A rough guide is to make the grid about three times the length of your longest word, with a minimum of 10x10 for short kids' lists and 15x15 to 20x20 for adult or themed puzzles. If you have many words or long words, go larger so the placement algorithm has room to work. A grid that is too small forces overlaps and may drop words.
Can I control the difficulty?
Yes. Allow only horizontal and vertical placement for an easy puzzle suitable for young children, add diagonals for a standard difficulty, and turn on backwards words for a hard challenge. Larger grids and longer word lists also raise the difficulty. The tool shows an estimated difficulty rating based on your settings so you can tune it before printing.
How do I print the word search and the answer key?
The print layout puts the puzzle and the word list on one page, with an optional answer key on a second page that highlights every word in the grid. Use your browser's print preview to check it fits, and pick "fit to page" if the grid is too wide. Teachers often print the puzzle for students and keep the answer key for grading.
Will the same letters appear randomly inside the grid?
Yes. After your words are placed, the remaining cells are filled with random letters drawn from the alphabet. Some builds bias the filler letters toward the letters already in your word list, which makes the puzzle harder because words blend in better. If you find puzzles too easy, switch on that "smart filler" option.
Does it work for non-English alphabets?
The default mode uses the 26-letter English alphabet, but most builds also support extended Latin characters with accents, and some include Spanish, French, and German letter sets. Right-to-left scripts like Arabic and Hebrew need special handling that this tool does not currently provide. For mixed-script or symbol puzzles, stick to the supported alphabets to avoid placement glitches.
