How do I play 2048?
Slide all tiles in one direction using the arrow keys on desktop or by swiping on a touch device. Whenever two tiles with the same number collide they merge into a single tile worth their sum. After every move a new 2 or 4 tile appears in a random empty cell. Your goal is to keep merging until you create a tile with the value 2048.
What controls does the game support?
On a computer use the four arrow keys, or W, A, S and D, to push the board up, left, down or right. On phones and tablets swipe across the grid in the direction you want the tiles to slide. Every input moves every tile as far as it can go before the next number is spawned, so plan each swipe carefully.
How is my score calculated?
You earn points whenever two tiles merge, and the points awarded equal the value of the new tile. Merging two 4s, for example, adds 8 to your score, while a 2048 merge adds a huge 2048. The current score and your best score are shown above the board, and the best score persists between sessions.
Are there any strategy tips for beginners?
Pick one corner, usually the bottom right, and keep your largest tile anchored there. Build a descending chain along the bottom row so the biggest numbers stay together. Avoid swiping in the direction that would dislodge your anchor tile. Keep the board as empty as possible by merging small tiles often, and never block yourself into a single move.
Does my game progress save automatically?
Yes. The current board state and your best score are stored in your browser's local storage, so you can close the tab and continue later from the same position. Clearing your browser data or using a private window will reset progress. Hitting the New Game button also wipes the saved board and starts you fresh.
Can I play 2048 on my phone?
Absolutely. The board is fully responsive and resizes to fit any screen, and swipe gestures replace the keyboard arrows on touch devices. The game runs entirely in the browser so no install is needed. Hold the device in portrait mode for the most comfortable layout, and avoid scrolling the page accidentally while swiping.
