How do I play Snake?
Steer the snake around the playfield to gobble up the food that keeps appearing. Each piece you eat makes the snake one segment longer and adds to your score. The game ends the moment the head crashes into a wall or into any part of its own body, so the longer you grow, the harder it becomes to avoid yourself.
What are the controls?
Use the arrow keys, or W, A, S and D, to turn the snake up, left, down or right. On touch devices swipe across the board in the direction you want to go. You cannot reverse directly into your own neck, so opposite key presses are ignored. The snake never stops moving, so you must keep steering at all times.
How does scoring work?
Every food item you eat adds one point to your score and one segment to your tail. There is no time bonus, just raw length, so the score on screen also tells you how long the snake is. Your best score is shown next to the current score so you always know how close you are to setting a new record.
Any tips for surviving longer?
Hug the walls early on to keep the centre of the board open as a safe playground. When the snake gets long, plan two or three moves ahead and never enter a space without an exit. If you find yourself coiled, follow your own tail at a constant distance, because the tail moves out of the way as you advance.
Does the game speed up?
Yes. The snake gets slightly faster after every few food items, so the early game is forgiving but late game requires sharp reactions. The acceleration is gradual rather than sudden, so you have time to adjust. If you crash, the speed resets at the start of the next round and you build it back up by eating again.
Is the high score saved?
Your highest score is stored in browser local storage, so it persists between sessions on the same device and browser. Clearing site data or switching to a different browser starts you from zero again. There is no online leaderboard, which keeps things private, but it also means you can only compete with your own personal best.
