How do I play Battleship?
You place your fleet of ships on a 10x10 grid hidden from the AI. The AI places its fleet on a separate grid hidden from you. You and the AI take turns guessing coordinates on the opponent's grid. A guess is either a hit or a miss, and a ship sinks once every cell it occupies has been hit. Sink the entire enemy fleet to win.
What ships are in the fleet?
The classic five-ship fleet is used: a five-cell carrier, a four-cell battleship, a three-cell cruiser, a three-cell submarine and a two-cell destroyer. That is a total of 17 cells you must hit to win. Ships do not overlap, do not touch the edge in unusual ways and can be placed horizontally or vertically but not diagonally.
How do I place my ships?
Drag each ship onto your grid, or use the Auto Place button to drop the entire fleet randomly. Click a placed ship to rotate it. Once you confirm placement the round begins. Random placement is recommended for beginners, because manual placement temptation is to bunch ships into a corner, which is actually one of the worst placement strategies.
Any strategy tips for hunting?
Once you score a hit, fire at the four neighbouring cells until you find the ship's direction, then continue in that direction until the ship sinks. In the search phase, fire on a checkerboard pattern with a spacing matching the smallest ship, which is two. This way the smallest ship cannot hide between your shots, no matter where it is placed.
Does the AI use intelligent targeting?
Yes. The AI fires randomly during search, but once it scores a hit it switches to a hunt mode that explores neighbours intelligently and tracks the line of the ship. Higher difficulty levels also avoid impossible placements based on misses, which makes the AI significantly stronger. Beating hard requires careful placement, not just lucky guessing.
Are wins tracked?
A session counter shows your wins and losses against the AI for the current page session. Refreshing the page clears it. There is no online leaderboard, so all rivalry is local. The fastest victory in shots fired is also tracked per difficulty in browser local storage, which gives a satisfying sub-objective beyond simply winning the round.
