How do I play Breakout?
A wall of bricks sits at the top of the screen. You control a paddle at the bottom, and a ball bounces between the paddle, the bricks and the walls. Use the paddle to keep the ball alive while it chips away at the bricks. Clear every brick to win the round. If the ball falls past the paddle, you lose a life.
What controls does the game support?
On desktop you move the paddle with the mouse, or with the left and right arrow keys. On touch devices, drag your finger across the lower part of the screen. The paddle follows your input directly with no inertia, which makes precision easy. Pressing space launches the ball at the start of each life and after a brick clearance.
Do the bricks have different point values?
Yes. The colour of a brick indicates its score and sometimes its toughness. Lower rows are usually worth fewer points and break in one hit. Higher rows often need two or even three hits before they shatter, but they are worth significantly more. Hidden inside the brick wall are occasional power-ups that fall when the brick is destroyed.
How many lives do I get?
You start with three lives, and an extra life is awarded at fixed score thresholds, usually every 10000 points. If the ball falls past your paddle you lose a life. Once all lives are gone, the game ends and your final score is shown. The aim is to maximise your score before running out of lives, not just to clear the wall.
Any strategy tips?
Try to punch the ball through the top of the wall so it bounces around the upper area, destroying many bricks for free while you wait. Use the paddle edges to angle the ball toward unbroken sections rather than aiming straight up. When a power-up falls, decide quickly whether it is worth diving for, because chasing a power-up at the wrong moment is the most common cause of death.
Is my high score saved?
Yes. Your top score is stored in browser local storage and shown above the playfield. Clearing browser data resets it. There is no online leaderboard, so your record is private. Reaching a new high score triggers a small celebration message at the end of the round, and the next round resumes from a fresh wall of bricks.
