How do I play Connect 4?
You and the AI take turns dropping coloured discs into a vertical 7 column by 6 row grid. Discs fall to the lowest empty slot in the chosen column. The first player to line up four of their discs in a row, column or diagonal wins. If the grid fills with no four in a row, the game is a draw.
How do I drop a disc?
Hover over a column on desktop, or tap one on a touchscreen, and the disc drops into the lowest available slot in that column. You cannot place a disc anywhere except at the bottom of the stack. If a column is already full it will be greyed out to show that you must choose a different one.
Does the AI use real strategy?
Yes. The AI looks several moves ahead with a minimax style search and considers threats from both players. It will block your obvious three in a row, set up double threats and exploit corners. On harder difficulty it rarely makes mistakes, so beating it requires forcing a fork where you threaten two wins at once that cannot both be blocked.
What is the best opening move?
Connect 4 is a solved game and the centre column is by far the strongest first move. From the centre you can build vertical, horizontal and diagonal threats in every direction, while corner columns severely limit your options. If you go second after the AI plays centre, mirror by also playing centre to keep the position balanced.
Is the score saved between rounds?
Wins, losses and draws against the AI are tracked for the current session and shown next to the board. Refreshing the page resets these counters. The chosen difficulty stays selected until you change it, so a new round on the same difficulty starts immediately after you click New Game and the counters update on the way out.
Can I play with two players locally?
The default mode is one player versus the AI, but a two player local toggle is available so two people can take turns on the same device. In two player mode the colours alternate after every move and there is no AI involved. This is great for quick matches with friends or family on a phone passed around the room.
