How does Cookie Clicker work?
Click the giant cookie to bake one cookie at a time. Use cookies to buy upgrades and buildings that bake cookies for you automatically. The more buildings you own, the higher your cookies per second rate. The whole game is about finding the right purchase order to grow your bakery from zero into a cookie-baking empire.
What buildings can I buy?
Cursors auto-click the cookie for you. Grandmas bake cookies by hand at a slow but steady rate. Farms grow cookie plants. Mines, factories, banks and beyond unlock as you progress, each more expensive but also more productive. Higher-tier buildings always have better cookies-per-cookie return, but only if you can afford one before the round burns out.
How do upgrades work?
Upgrades multiply the production of a specific building or of all buildings. They unlock at milestone levels, such as owning 10 grandmas. Buy upgrades whenever they are affordable, because they are almost always a better return on investment than another building of the same kind. The upgrade list itself is part of the long-term meta of finishing the game.
Any tips for early progress?
Click the cookie manually for the first minute or two until you can afford your first cursor. Then buy buildings in waves rather than one at a time, because the price scales gently while your income scales aggressively. Always buy any visible upgrade for a building you own, even if it seems expensive, because the multiplicative bonus pays back quickly.
Does my progress save automatically?
Yes. The game saves to browser local storage every few seconds, so closing the tab and coming back later resumes from where you left off. Cookies do not bake while the tab is closed by default, but a small offline production bonus is awarded when you return. Clearing browser data resets your bakery to zero, so back up your save if you care.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The big cookie scales to fit any screen and is comfortable to tap with a thumb. Buildings and upgrades appear in a scrollable side panel. Long sessions can drain phone battery quickly because of the constant animations, so plug in your charger if you plan a serious idle session, especially during late game when many particle effects appear.
