How do I play Dots and Boxes?
A grid of dots is shown. On your turn, draw a line between two adjacent dots. If your line completes the fourth side of a small box, you claim that box with your colour and you go again. If not, the AI plays next. When every line is drawn, the player with the most claimed boxes wins.
What grid sizes are available?
A 3x3 dot grid, which contains 4 boxes, is great for kids or a quick game. The default 5x5 grid has 16 boxes and gives a satisfying mid-length match. A 7x7 grid has 36 boxes and turns into a real strategic battle, often lasting many minutes. Switch grid size from the menu before starting a round, because changing size during a round resets the board.
Is there a strategy beyond drawing random lines?
Yes, and the strategy is what makes it more than a kids game. The opening is about avoiding being the one who completes the third side of any box. The endgame revolves around forcing your opponent into long chains, then sacrificing two boxes to keep the chain control. The double cross technique, where you give up two boxes deliberately, is the central tactic.
Does the AI play smartly?
On easy difficulty the AI just avoids obvious mistakes. On medium it counts chains and applies basic chain control. On hard it uses an evaluation function that handles the double cross correctly, so beating it requires real understanding of long chains and parity. Try medium first if you are new to the strategy, because hard quickly punishes loose play.
Can I play locally with a friend?
Yes. A two player local mode is available, where players take turns on the same device. The colours alternate and there is no AI involved. This is great for two people on a phone or tablet, with each player tapping their lines on their own turn. The grid resizes to suit smaller screens, so even 7x7 is playable on phones.
Are wins tracked?
A session counter shows your wins, losses and the count of completed boxes for and against the AI for the current page session. Refreshing the page clears the counters. There is no online leaderboard, so the rivalry is local. The chosen difficulty stays selected between rounds until you change it, so consecutive matches feel consistent in challenge.
