How do I play Pong?
A ball bounces between two paddles on opposite sides of the screen. You control one paddle with the mouse, or with the up and down arrow keys, while the AI controls the other. Hit the ball back and forth. If the ball gets past your paddle the AI scores a point, and vice versa. First to 11 wins.
How does the ball speed change?
The ball gets faster every time it is returned during a rally, which puts pressure on both players to react quickly. After a point is scored, the speed resets for the next serve. Long rallies become genuinely fast, so positioning your paddle in advance matters more as the rally lengthens. Hitting the corner of your paddle adds spin to the bounce.
Is there spin or just straight bounces?
There is a simple spin model. The angle of return depends on where the ball hits your paddle. The middle of the paddle returns the ball straight, while the top or bottom edges return it at a steeper angle. Use this to send the ball where the AI is not, especially as the speed climbs and the AI can no longer cover both ends of the screen.
Any tips for beating the AI?
Keep your paddle near the centre of the screen between rallies, because that minimises the distance to either edge. Aim for the AI's corners using paddle edges to add steep angles. The AI is fast but has a tiny reaction delay, so quick reverses on the ball with edge hits can catch it out, especially during long, fast rallies.
Are wins tracked?
A simple session counter shows wins and losses against the AI for the current page session. Refreshing the page resets the counter. Each match is first to 11 points with a two point clear lead, just like the original arcade rules. Matches usually last around two to four minutes, so a quick best of three is easy to fit into a break.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. On touch devices, drag your finger up and down on your half of the screen to move the paddle. The ball physics and scoring rules are the same as on desktop. Phones in landscape orientation give the best experience, because a wider playfield makes long rallies more comfortable. No install or sign-in is required.
