How do I play Tetris?
Falling blocks called tetrominoes drop from the top of the playfield. Move and rotate each piece so that it locks into the stack at the bottom. Whenever you fill a complete horizontal row, that row clears and the rows above shift down. The game speeds up as you score, and it ends when the stack reaches the top of the playfield.
What are the controls?
Left and right arrow keys move the piece sideways. Up arrow rotates clockwise, and Z rotates counter clockwise. Down arrow soft drops the piece for extra points per row, and space hard drops it instantly. C swaps the current piece into a hold slot for later use. On touch devices swipe left, right and down, and tap to rotate.
How is scoring calculated?
Clearing one row scores 100 points, two rows together 300, three rows 500 and four rows at once, called a Tetris, scores 800. Multipliers apply per level, so the same line clear at level five is worth far more than at level one. Soft and hard drops add small bonuses per row, and back to back Tetrises chain together for extra points.
Any strategy tips for beginners?
Build a flat surface across most of the playfield and leave one column empty at the side, called the well. Drop straight pieces into the well to score four-line Tetrises for big points. Avoid creating overhangs, because they trap empty spaces under your stack and slow down clears. Always know what your next piece is and plan two moves ahead.
Is the high score saved?
Yes. Your highest score, the highest level reached and the most lines cleared in a single game are all stored in browser local storage and shown next to the playfield. Beating any of these records triggers a celebration. Clearing browser data resets the records. There is no online leaderboard, so the only competition is your own personal best.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. A touch control overlay appears on phones, with on-screen buttons for left, right, rotate, soft drop, hard drop and hold. Swipes are also supported as an alternative. Phones in portrait orientation give the most comfortable layout for the tall, narrow playfield. The game runs entirely in the browser, so no install or sign in is required.
