How do I play Word Hunt?
A 4x4 grid of letters is shown. Drag your finger or mouse across adjacent letters, including diagonally adjacent ones, to spell a word. Each letter cell can only be used once per word. Submit the word by lifting your finger or clicking once more. Valid words are added to your list and your score climbs based on word length.
How long is each round?
Rounds last 90 seconds by default. The timer is shown above the grid, and the round ends when it reaches zero. A summary screen lists every word you found, every word you missed and your final score. The fixed time pressure is what makes the game exciting, because longer rounds quickly stop being challenging once you spot the easy words.
How are points awarded?
Three letter words are worth 1 point, four letters are 2, five letters are 4, six letters are 6, seven letters are 9 and longer words are worth more still. The score curve heavily rewards longer words, so finding even one or two seven letter chains can outweigh a dozen short words. Aim for length, not just count.
Any tips for finding more words?
Look for common prefixes like UN, RE and ED. Scan for common suffixes like ING, ED and ER, and work backward to see if a longer chain fits. Plurals ending in S add a free letter to many of your finds. When stuck, simply move your finger across the board exploring chains, because muscle memory often spots words your eyes miss.
Does the dictionary include unusual words?
The dictionary uses common English words and rejects very obscure ones to keep the game fair. Plurals, verb forms and common everyday words are all in. Proper nouns and abbreviations are not. If a word you tried is rejected even though you know it is real, it is most likely too rare for the standard wordlist used here.
Is my best score saved?
Yes. Your highest score and your single longest word found are stored in browser local storage and shown next to the timer at the start of every round. Beating either record triggers a celebration. Clearing browser data resets them. There is no online leaderboard, so the only person to beat is yourself, which is the most rewarding kind of competition.
