What does the ATS Resume Score Checker actually do?
It compares your resume against a job description and gives you a 0-100 match score. Behind the scenes it tokenizes the job description, filters out stopwords, and surfaces the most important 30 keywords (proper nouns, capitalized tech terms, bullet-point heads, and frequently repeated words). It then checks each keyword against your resume and combines that with a few formatting heuristics to produce the score.
Is my resume uploaded anywhere when I use this tool?
No. Everything runs in your browser. PDFs are parsed locally with PDF.js, the keyword extraction happens in JavaScript, and the result never leaves your device. There is no server upload, no telemetry, and no way for us or anyone else to read your resume. You can verify this by opening the network tab - no POST requests are made.
How is the score calculated?
The score is weighted: 80% comes from keyword overlap (how many of the JD's top priority keywords appear in your resume) and 20% comes from formatting (penalties for image-only PDFs, multi-column layouts, missing contact info, and pipe or arrow separators that older ATS sometimes mangle). A well-aligned resume against a clear JD typically lands between 70 and 90.
Why are some keywords flagged as missing when I do mention them?
The checker uses whole-word matching, case-insensitively. If the JD uses "TypeScript" but your resume says "TS," the checker will not connect them. Similarly, "stakeholder management" is matched as a single phrase only if both words appear next to each other. The fix is to mirror the JD's exact phrasing in at least one bullet point on your resume.
How accurate is this compared to a real ATS like Workday or Greenhouse?
It is a directional check, not a perfect simulation. Real ATS use proprietary parsers, taxonomies, and scoring rules that vary by employer. Use this tool as a quick sanity check before submitting - if the score is below 60, you have real work to do; if it is above 80, you are in good shape. Above 90 starts to risk keyword stuffing.
When should I not rely on this tool?
For senior or executive roles where recruiters read every line, for academic CVs (different formatting rules apply), or when the JD is unusually short and the keyword extractor has too little to work with. The tool also cannot evaluate writing quality, tone, narrative coherence, or whether your accomplishments are actually impressive - it only measures surface-level match.
