How is a bibliography different from a works cited list?
In MLA, the list is called Works Cited and includes only sources you cited in the paper. In APA, it is called References. Chicago uses Bibliography for notes-bibliography style and References for author-date. A bibliography in the broader sense can also include sources you consulted but did not cite. The builder lets you choose the heading that matches your style guide.
Are entries automatically alphabetized?
Yes. APA, MLA, and Chicago all sort entries alphabetically by the first author's surname, or by the title when no author is given. The builder applies the correct sort and ignores leading articles like A, An, and The when alphabetizing titles. For numbered IEEE bibliographies, entries appear in the order they were cited in the text rather than alphabetically.
How do I format a hanging indent?
APA, MLA, and Chicago all require a hanging indent of 0.5 inches, meaning the first line is flush left and subsequent lines are indented. The builder displays this on screen and preserves it when you copy as rich text into Word or Google Docs. If pasting as plain text strips the indent, apply it in your word processor using the paragraph dialog.
Can I import citations from another tool?
You can paste pre-formatted citations one per line and the builder will combine and sort them. If you have a list from Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote, export as plain text in your chosen style and paste here. The tool will not re-parse or re-format the entries, so they need to already be in the correct style before importing.
Does it handle sources with no author or date?
Yes. When the author is missing, the title takes the alphabetizing position in APA and MLA. When the date is missing, APA uses n.d. (no date) and MLA simply omits it. Chicago uses n.d. as well. The builder inserts these placeholders automatically so your bibliography stays consistent and your in-text citations still match.
Will the bibliography pass plagiarism and originality checks?
A correctly formatted bibliography is not flagged as plagiarism because the entries are bibliographic data, not copied prose. Tools like Turnitin recognize reference lists and exclude them from similarity scores when configured properly. The bigger risk is missing in-text citations for paraphrased ideas; the bibliography alone does not protect against that, so cite every borrowed idea in the body of your paper.
