How do weighted assignments work?
Each assignment or category has a weight expressed as a percentage of the final grade. The calculator multiplies your score on each item by its weight, sums those weighted scores, and divides by the total weight used so far. If your syllabus says homework is 20 percent, midterm 30 percent, and final 50 percent, those weights must add up to 100 for a complete grade.
What grade do I need on the final to get an A?
Use the target-grade mode. Enter your current scores and weights, set the desired final letter grade (typically 90 or 93 percent for an A depending on the scale), and the calculator solves for the score you need on the remaining assignments. If the required score exceeds 100 percent, the target is mathematically impossible without extra credit.
Why does my calculated grade differ from the gradebook?
Common causes are dropped lowest scores, extra credit not yet applied, late penalties, or curve adjustments. Many learning management systems also display running averages that exclude unsubmitted work, while the calculator treats blanks as either zero or excluded depending on your choice. Match the gradebook's rules exactly, including drop policies, before assuming there is an error.
How do I convert a percentage to a letter grade?
The most common US scale is A 90 to 100, B 80 to 89, C 70 to 79, D 60 to 69, F below 60. Many schools use plus and minus bands, such as A minus at 90 to 92 and A at 93 to 100. The calculator outputs both the percentage and the matching letter using a standard scale, but always confirm with your syllabus since cutoffs vary by instructor.
Can teachers use this to plan their grading?
Yes. Teachers often use it to set category weights before the semester starts and to verify that the math in the syllabus produces the distribution they want. Run sample students with hypothetical scores to confirm that an A or a passing grade is achievable. It is also useful for students asking what-if questions during office hours.
Is the calculator accessible for students using screen readers?
Yes. Inputs have visible labels, results update with ARIA live regions so screen readers announce new totals, and the page works with keyboard-only navigation. Color is never the sole indicator of pass or fail; the letter grade and percentage are always shown as text. This matches WCAG 2.1 AA guidance for educational tools.
