How does the list picker work?
Paste your list (one item per line, or comma-separated), choose how many to pick, and the tool returns a uniformly random selection. Each item starts with equal weight, and the picker uses a high-quality random source so the choice is genuinely fair. This is ideal for raffles, giveaway draws, "who goes first" decisions, and randomizing test cases.
What is the difference between picking with and without replacement?
Without replacement, an item cannot be picked twice in the same draw, which is what you want for a raffle (one winner per prize). With replacement, the same item can be selected multiple times, which models scenarios like "pick a random song to play" where the same song might come up again. Toggle the option based on your use case.
Can I weight items so some are more likely?
Yes. Add a weight in parentheses or a separate column (for example "Alice (3)" gives Alice three times the chance of someone with weight 1). This is useful for biased raffles where extra entries reward certain participants, or for weighted A/B testing where you want 70 percent of users in one bucket. Without weights every item is equally likely.
How many items can I paste in?
The tool handles thousands of items without trouble, though pasting more than 10,000 lines may slow your browser. For massive lists (a million entries) use a server-side or scripted picker. For typical use cases, a class roster of 30 names or a giveaway entry list of 5,000 entries works smoothly.
Is it suitable for fair giveaways and contests?
For casual use, yes. For legally regulated giveaways (large cash prizes, sweepstakes with consumer-protection oversight), most jurisdictions require an auditable selection process: a notarized draw, a recorded video, or an approved third-party service. The tool is fair, but it does not produce the documentation regulators ask for. Use it for the fun stuff and a certified service for the regulated stuff.
Can I shuffle the entire list instead of picking a few?
Yes. Set the pick count equal to the list length and turn off replacement, and you get the whole list in random order. This is a true Fisher-Yates shuffle, useful for creating randomized question orders, fair speaking-order rotations, or randomly seeding a tournament bracket. The output preserves every original item exactly once.
