How does the time zone converter handle daylight saving time?
The converter uses the IANA time zone database, which knows the exact DST rules and historical transitions for every region. When you pick a date, it applies the correct UTC offset for that day, so March 14 in New York shows EDT (-4) while March 7 shows EST (-5). You do not need to track DST manually; the tool flips offsets automatically based on the date you select.
Why does the converter show different offsets for the same city on different dates?
Most countries shift their clocks twice a year for daylight saving time, and the offset from UTC changes by one hour. London is UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer. Sydney is UTC+10 in their winter and UTC+11 in their summer. Picking a date in March or October near the transition will show whichever offset applies to that exact day.
Can I convert a meeting time across more than two zones at once?
Yes. Add as many zones as you need and the converter shows the same instant in every zone side by side. This is the fastest way to schedule a call between team members in San Francisco, London, and Mumbai without doing the arithmetic yourself. You can drag any row to change the source time and the others update in real time.
Why do some zones have a 30 or 45 minute offset?
Not every zone is on a whole-hour offset. India is UTC+5:30, Nepal is UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia use UTC+9:30. These half-hour and quarter-hour zones are correctly represented in the IANA database, and the converter handles them without rounding. Always pick the city or region rather than guessing the offset.
What is the difference between EST, EDT, and Eastern Time?
EST is Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5), used in winter. EDT is Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4), used in summer. Eastern Time (ET) is the umbrella label that automatically follows whichever is currently in force. For accurate scheduling, pick the IANA zone like America/New_York, which always resolves to the correct offset for the date.
Does the converter account for countries that abolished DST?
Yes. Russia stopped DST in 2011, Turkey in 2016, and several US states have proposed ending it. The IANA database is updated whenever a country changes its rules, so historical dates use the rules that were in force at that time and current dates use the latest rules. Always pick the city, not a fixed offset.
