About the Trip Cost Splitter

The Trip Cost Splitter handles the math of group expenses without the awkward conversation at the end. Each person enters what they paid; the tool computes everyone's fair share, identifies who owes whom, and returns the minimum number of transfers that settle the group - so a group of six might require three payments instead of fifteen tangled ones.

Built for vacations, roommate households, dinners, weddings, and any event where expenses pile up across multiple people. The calculator supports per-expense participant lists (not every cost involves everyone), multi-currency trips, and "paid by X but split among Y" arrangements - when one person fronts the cost for others. Export the result as a shareable link or PDF.

Common use cases

  • Settle a group vacation where multiple people paid for different things
  • Track recurring shared household expenses with roommates
  • Split a multi-course restaurant bill where not everyone ordered the same
  • Document expense splits for a wedding or large event

Tips for accurate results

Enter expenses as they happen rather than waiting until the end of the trip. Trying to reconstruct who paid for what after a week of meals, gas, hotels, and Ubers is a nightmare; logging each as it happens (the calculator supports this) keeps it accurate and prevents the "I think I covered that one?" arguments that follow group trips.

Privacy & data handling

The Trip Cost Splitter runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or shared with third parties - the math happens locally and your inputs disappear when you close the tab. There is no signup, no email collection, and no daily-use limit.

How does the splitter calculate settlements?
It sums everyone's contributions, divides by participants to find each person's fair share, and identifies who paid more or less than their share. Then it greedy-matches debtors to creditors to minimize the number of transfers - so a group of 6 might settle with 3 payments instead of 15 random ones.
Can I handle expenses where not everyone is involved?
Yes - for each expense, mark which participants it applies to. If 3 people went to lunch while 5 are on the trip, only the 3 split that bill. The settlement calculation handles per-expense participant lists automatically.
Does it support different currencies?
Set a base currency for the trip; enter individual expenses in whatever currency they actually occurred (with conversion rate), and the tool normalizes everything to the base for settlement. Useful for international trips with mixed local-currency cash and back-home credit card charges.
Can I share the calculation with the group?
Yes - export the settlement as a shareable link or PDF. The link encodes the trip state in the URL, so anyone you send it to sees the same expenses and balances. Nothing is stored server-side, which means it stays private to whoever has the link.
What about partial payments and IOUs?
Mark expenses as "paid by X but split between Y and Z" - the participant who actually paid doesn't need to be one of the people who consume the expense. Useful when one person fronts the cost for others (e.g., booking a hotel on one card, splitting between roommates).
